USC Photo Spot
Bovard Auditorium sits prominently on Trousdale Parkway with its red brick exterior, white columns, and classic collegiate design. The long walkway leading up to the building creates one of the most dramatic approach compositions on campus. It is an underrated location that delivers stunning results.
What makes Bovard special is depth. The long walkway provides leading lines that draw the viewer's eye straight to you standing in front of the building. This depth creates a sense of grandeur that flatter compositions cannot achieve. I shoot from the far end of the walkway with a telephoto lens to compress the perspective, making the columns and building loom impressively behind you.
The columns along the front of the building are ideal for portrait-style shots. I position graduates between columns for a clean, framed composition where the white pillars create strong vertical lines on either side of you. The red brick background provides a warm, rich tone that complements both cardinal-and-gold USC regalia and casual outfits.
The building faces south, so afternoon light hits the front evenly without harsh shadows from the columns. Between 3pm and 5pm, the lighting is consistently flattering. The covered colonnade also provides shade for alternative compositions if the sun is too direct.
Bovard connects directly to Tommy Trojan and Doheny Library via Trousdale Parkway, making it the natural middle stop in a three-location central campus route. I typically shoot Bovard between the other two, capturing the walkway approach while we are already moving between the marquee spots.
