USC Photo Spot
Doheny Memorial Library is the architectural crown jewel of USC. The Romanesque facade, the arched entrance, the grand staircase, and the towering columns create a backdrop that looks like it belongs in a film. It is one of the most versatile photo locations on campus because you can shoot from so many different angles, each producing a distinct composition.
The front steps are the signature shot. The wide staircase gives you elevation options: standing at the top with the building framing you, walking up the steps for a candid feel, or sitting on the lower stairs for a relaxed pose. I also use the side pillars to frame tighter portraits where the stone columns create a natural border around you.
What makes Doheny special from a photography standpoint is the light. The building faces east, which means the front facade transitions into shade during the afternoon. This shaded condition is ideal for portraits because it eliminates squinting, removes harsh shadows from the columns, and creates soft, even illumination across your face. The window between 3pm and 5pm is when Doheny photographs best.
The arched entrance is another highlight. Standing centered in the doorway with the dark interior behind you creates a dramatic, high-contrast composition. I use off-camera flash to light you against the shadow, producing a portrait that has real depth and visual impact. It is one of the most requested shots from my USC portfolio.
Doheny pairs naturally with Mudd Hall (a short walk west) and Tommy Trojan (a few minutes east on Trousdale). This central campus route gives your gallery a mix of grand architecture, Romanesque details, and the iconic statue.
